12 tools for the maintenance technician
Production facility failures invariably result in losses. Large costs and disgruntled customers are the results of repairs, unscheduled downtime, and delayed orders. How can these circumstances be resolved? What could be done to prevent expensive breakdowns and downtime?
We have assembled 12 tools for the maintenance technician today to assist in industrial plant machine prevention.
Table of Contents
1. Pyrometers
Devices for measuring the temperature at the point of care without contact. They operate by measuring the thermal radiation intensity. They are especially well suited for taking temperature readings from hard-to-reach areas.
2. Thermal imaging cameras
Measurement tools are used by professionals to identify and repair defective parts in all lighting conditions. The measurements produce a picture in which regions with various temperatures can be identified. Even with challenging or hazardous access to the measurement region, thermal imaging cameras demonstrate their value.
3. Industrial thermometers
Metres with a strengthened design to gauge the temperature of liquids and the environment. The employment of gas excitation, bimetal action, or expansion forms the foundation of its operating principle. Temperatures between -200 and +700 °C are measured with industrial thermometers.
4. Hygrometers (humidity meters)
Equipment for measuring the air’s moisture content. The hygrometer works by utilising the phenomena of a substance’s characteristics changing as a result of variations in atmospheric humidity. They are employed to regulate the temperature in the room.
5. Decibel meters (sonometers)
The instrument measures the amount of noise in commercial buildings, offices, and traffic. especially helpful for determining how loud the gear is when it is functioning. By gauging the volume of the sound, we can precisely assess noise levels.
6. Vibrometers (vibration meters)
They are used to measure speed, acceleration and displacement. They measure the vibrations and oscillations of machines. They make it possible to assess the condition of machines and equipment in terms of synchronisation, misalignment or looseness of parts.
7. Technical endoscopes
Cameras for inspection in difficult-to-access places. A camera with a recorder, a long connection, a monitor, a control panel, and centralizers are typically part of them. They can be used to look inside pipes, tanks, and motors to see how they are doing.
8. Tachometers (speedometers)
Measures of speed using a non-invasive technique. They help figure out how fast shafts and other spinning parts rotate.
9. Electricity meters
Tools for diagnosing issues brought on by poor power quality. They are employed to keep an eye on the variables in industrial plant power supply and energy distribution networks. For machine diagnostics, electrical testers such as voltage testers, circuit continuity testers, phase sequence indicators, insulation testers, and voltage testers may be required.
10. Cable locators
They are used to locate cables and wires and map out their paths. They enable the detection of their degradation (interruption, short circuit). They can locate the pipes in a heating or water system.
11. Pressure gauges (manometers)
They measure the pressure of gases and liquids. Useful for the diagnosis of mainly hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
12. Computerised Maintenance Management Systems
The CMMS software supports maintenance services in industrial operations as well. The following tasks can be automated using CMMS applications:
- notifications of breakdowns, repairs and replacements,
- maintenance planning and prevention of machinery,
- stock management of spare parts,
- supervision and organisation of staff work (updating of the list of tasks and overview of their progress)
- management of equipment and documentation records,
- purchase of new equipment and spare parts.
Summary
The provided instruments aid maintenance personnel in industrial plant machinery preservation. Modern metres have inbuilt memory where they may digitally save measurement findings, providing continuous process control. The equipment enables the recording, transmission, and reporting of a vast number of findings, including graphically.
